Description
Elysium is the finest example of a Southerly 135 RS that I have seen. She has been lightly used and thoughtfully upgraded by her current owners. She presents remarkably well for a 2002. The topsides and deck are shiny and bright, the canvas is in great condition and the beautiful teak interior joinery looks fantastic.
The Southerly 135 was smartly designed by Rob Humphreys and solidly built by Northshore Yachts in the UK for cruising. The model features a cast iron variable draft swing keel (+/- 3,610 lbs.) that is mounted to a substantial grounding plate (+/- 6,230 lbs.). The keel pivots on a two inch stainless steel pin. It draws 2' 9" with the keel up and 9' 9" with the keel down.
Elysium has a raised salon, separate seating alcove with a table, large galley, three cabins, two heads and a work room.
She is en-route to Charleston, SC where she is scheduled for a full bottom job.

Interior Layout
Elysium has 3 cabins and 2 heads and will sleep 6 people comfortably. The beautiful teak joinery has inlays in the doors and the salon table. The deck salon windows provide panoramic views from the raised salon and navigation station. In addition there are many ports and hatches which provide excellent lighting and ventilation. There is even a dedicated work/storage area that is accessible from the aft cabin.
Main Salon: The raised salon is a wonderful place to sit comfortably with generous seating for 6 people. Large salon windows provide great visibility and allow you to see what is going on around you. This area is very comfortable either underway or when entertaining. The fixed salon table folds to provide a smaller coffee table or expands to make a dining table. Storage is found under the seating and outboard in lockers. Concertina blinds can be drawn partially or completely over the salon windows for additional privacy.
There is a separate seating alcove on the starboard side forward of the main salon. This provides a pleasant area away from the main salon for some quite reading or for the kids to play a game. The table folds down out of the way when not required. Nice sized windows provide plenty of light and are suitably placed to see outside while seated.
Nav: Opposite the salon, on the starboard side is the nav area. For additional details see “Nav and Electronics” below.
Galley: The galley is amidships to starboard in a lower position for greatest comfort at sea. For further details see “Galley” below.
Owners Stateroom: The large master stateroom is aft and has a centerline berth with seating on either side, convenient outboard shelves, and a private ensuite head. There is good head room (approximately 6' 3") and plenty of room to move around. Opposite the berth is a vanity with a beveled mirror and drawers. With 4 opening ports and a large hatch there is plenty of light and ventilation. In addition, there are numerous overhead lights and reading lights. Additional storage is provided by a large hanging locker and another outboard locker with shelves.

Forward Cabin: The forward cabin has a long v-berth with a filler and private access to the "day" head. Sails and Rigging
The Seldén rig is well thought out, the Furlex roller-furling headsail system is easy to handle, and the placement of sheet leads makes single handling a snap. The steering is finger-touch smooth, and with the keel fully down, the vessel tracks very well. She exhibits neither the quick, jerky motion of a lightweight race boat nor the bargelike undulations of a full-sectioned heavy-displacement cruiser.
- Selden inmast furling main

- Roller furling gennaker (little used)
- Genoa tracks
- Storm jib (lightly used)

Hull, Deck and Equipment
Hull: Hand laid up heavy duty GRP molding, incorporating multi-axial and unidirectional reinforcements for strength and impact resistance. The hull is cored above the water line for insulation and weight reduction and is solid glass below. Thickness increases progressively toward the keel area. The keel box is an integral part of the hull layup. There is a substantial skeg fitted on centerline to protect the propeller and rudder when the yacht is dried out.
Swing Keel: The Swing Keel (this is not a centerboard) can be easily raised and lowered with just the push of a button and stopped anywhere in between. When lowered, the keel is an impressive 9 feet 9 inches, considerably deeper than similar sized cruising yachts. The additional draft enhances both performance and stability. The push button control as well as a gauge to show the keel position is fitted at the pedestal. The keel can be raised manually, if needed.
Rudder and Steering: The low-aspect-ratio rudder is attached to a long skeg that lends it significant support and also provides additional directional stability. The blade itself is semi balanced and, teamed up with a nicely installed Whitlock Mamba bevel-gear, torsion-rod steering system, it gives the helm a smooth, responsive feel.
Deck: The decks are nonslip. Raised teak capped bulwarks provide extra comfort and safety. Forward is a stainless steel stem head fitting with twin bow rollers and a windlass. A nice aft deck with large stern rail seats.
Cockpit: Center cockpit. Portside cockpit locker has steps leading down to a work area for quick access to the engine and generator. The transom has sugar scoop steps and a SS bathing ladder.

Matt Malatich, CPYB is the Managing Broker of S&J Yachts in Charleston, S.C., where he is a standout in helping clients navigate the acquisition or disposition process of luxury cruising yachts.
Boating has always been at the forefront of Matt’s life. From growing up on boats, to pleasure cruising and racing, to watching his own kids learn the lines, Matt’s love of the sea is woven throughout the canvas of his life.
It’s no wonder that a heart for the water, a head for business and a degree from Hamilton College led Matt to launch his career in 1996 as a yacht broker with J/Port and then Crusader Yacht Sales in Annapolis, MD. In this role, he sold brokerage boats and new J/Boats, Ericsons, Pacific Seacraft, Sagas and Tiaras.
Shortly after being named Salesperson of the Year for Pacific Seacraft, Matt returned to his hometown of Princeton, N.J., in 1999 to expand his professional experience to commercial real estate. Matt served as a commercial real estate broker for CBRE and Preferred Real Estate Investments, where he focused on acquisitions of large corporate-owned properties for redevelopment as well as leasing of office properties and due diligence of large-scale dispositions.
Matt transitioned to the role of Assistant Director of Leasing for Hilton Realty, a fully integrated real estate development and management company in 2006. For nearly a decade, Matt’s primary focus was on marketing and leasing industrial, office and retail properties to large banks, law firms, technology firms, pharmaceutical companies, national retailers as well as mom and pop stores.
In 2015, Matt’s genuine affinity toward boating prompted him to make a sea change personally and professionally. Trading bricks for boats, Matt returned to the yacht brokerage business as the Managing Broker for S&J Yacht’s Charleston office.
Today, drawing from nearly 25 years of combined experience in yacht brokerage and commercial real estate, Matt has built a reputation for his proven ability to assist buyers and sellers of upscale power and cruising sailboats throughout North America and Europe.
As a seasoned broker, Matt understands that buying and selling can be both one of the most euphoric and stressful times in a boater’s journey, and views representation and guidance of his clients’ dreams as a true privilege.
Matt’s calm and easy demeanor provides clients with a steady hand at the wheel to help them obtain the best value for their dream yacht, as well as assisting sellers with a smooth sale of their vessel when the time is right. He is well positioned to be an advocate throughout the entire transaction process by prescreening boats (including obtaining their true histories), facilitating showings, navigating financing options, insurance needs, surveys and the closing process.
