The Catalina 40 Mk II is a must sought after model in the Catalina line-up providing good sailing ability, shallow draft and unexpected interior accommodations for an aft cockpit boat in this size range. Designed by Frank and Jerry Douglas, the Mark II redefines what is possible in 40 feet. Her cockpit and deck configuration provides for both the short-handed sailor as well as those with a larger crew of family and friends with a user-friendly cockpit.
WALK-THROUGH
Stepping aboard from aft, there is a sugar-scoop transom with a wide walkthrough transom featuring a folding stainless steel swim ladder. This blends nicely into a cockpit with both sailing and dockside entertainment for up to eight adults. The cockpit features a twin helm configuration leather wrapped stainless steel wheels on an Edson steering system all of which provide exceptional sightlines forward while sailing and clear visibility for sail trimming, this also provides an unobstructed passage directly from the transom to the companionway. A large permanently mounted fiberglass dropleaf cockpit table with storage in the center as well as centrally mounted instruments which include radar, autopilot, knot, wind and depth. Finishing the cockpit are stern rail seats and a custom stainless steel arch with solar panels. Protection from the weather is provided by a bimini and dodger as well as matching covers for the table, wheels and winches.
Moving forward from the cockpit there are wide unobstructed side decks with inboard jib sheets and shrouds adding to the clear decks which also provides a tighter sheeting angle for the head sail. Double lifelines run full length of the deck with port and starboard boarding gates and a stainless steel bow pulpit. A large anchor locker with electric windlass completes the foredeck which eases dropping the hook in some secluded anchorage.
Halyards, and control lines travel aft beneath the traveler and through deck organizers to a series of Lewmar winches mounted on either side of the companionway.
Going below the wide companionway stairs reveals a large well laid out salon/ galley area. This cabin has plenty of natural light and ventilation provided by five overhead hatches and portlights. The Galley: Positioned to starboard at the base of the companionway, is the large U-shaped galley with a top and front-loading refrigerator/ freezer for cold storage, a three burner stainless steel stove with oven complete with a range hood and for those quick meals a built-in microwave. There is a large double bowl stainless steel sink and plenty of counter space. As for general food storage and galley wear there is an abundance cabinets and drawers of which is all finished in teak.
The saloon features a large U-shaped dinette to starboard that comfortably seats 6 for dinner then can be lowered to make a double berth. To port is a long settee with a nav station at the aft end featuring a swing out chair. All of these furnishings are covered in a soft green ultra-leather. The bulkheads and cabinetry are made of beautifully finished varnished teak with the cabin sole in teak and holly.
The real beauty of the Catalina 400 Mk II layout lies in its two-cabin, two-head arrangement, splitting the sleeping cabins to opposite ends of the boat providing better privacy when guests are aboard.
The owner's stateroom is located aft. This cabin occupies the full beam of the boat’s stern. It features a queen-sized island bed, a luxury virtually unheard of in most 40-foot aft cockpit boats. Surrounded port and starboard hanging lockers, deep storage bins, berth level doored storage compartments and a dedicated vanity at the foot end of the berth. There is also seating on both the port and starboard sides of the berth. To complete the owner’s stateroom, this cabin also has private access to the main day head, which includes a fully enclosed walk-in stall shower with standing headroom.
The forward guest cabin is located in the bow. This cabin has a large V-berth with seating on port side with a hanging locker and private en-suite head with shower.
Beneath the companionway steps is the main access to the yanmar engine as well as a large lift off panel in the aft cabin providing great access to both the front and rear of the engine.
