A cruising yacht at sea under sail at golden hour
Our History

Brokers, not salesmen.

A boutique brokerage for serious cruisers, founded in 2004 by Sharon and Jack Malatich. Twenty years on, six harbours, four decades of brokering — and the same conviction we started with.

From the founders

We started with a conviction: the right broker is part counsel, part cruiser, and part craftsman. That has not changed in twenty years, and it will not change in the next twenty.

S&J Yachts is a boutique full-service brokerage representing serious cruisers and offshore sailors along the entire Atlantic seaboard. We are authorised dealers for Southerly, Bavaria, Makai, Dufour Cervetti and Fratelli Aprea — and we broker the most discerning pre-owned fleet on the coast. From Annapolis to Palmetto, every harbour office is staffed by brokers who own boats, race boats, and cruise the same waters as their clients.

Twenty years

The map of the brokerage

  1. 1996

    Brokering since

Jack Malatich begins brokering cruising yachts on the Chesapeake — long before there is an S&J. The conviction that fixes the trade in his head: a broker must own boats and sail them.

  2. 2004

    S&J Yachts founded

Sharon and Jack Malatich open S&J Yachts in Annapolis. From day one the house is built around two principles — represent yachts that we would buy ourselves, and stand behind every listing we take.

  3. Southerly

    Authorised dealerships

S&J becomes the East-coast representative for Southerly Yachts — the variable-draft cruiser that can take the thin water of the Bahamas and the open ocean alike. Other dealerships follow: Bavaria, Makai, Fratelli Aprea, Dufour Cervetti.

  4. Growth

    Down the seaboard

Offices open at Rock Hall, Deltaville, and New Bern. The map of the brokerage matches the map of the seaboard — wherever cruisers winter, refit, or commission, an S&J broker is on the dock.

  5. Six harbours

    Charleston & Palmetto

Two final harbours — Charleston, South Carolina and Palmetto, Florida — round out the network. Six offices from Maine to the Gulf, all staffed by brokers who own and sail the boats they sell.

  6. Today

    The house, twenty years on

We remain a boutique brokerage in a market increasingly dominated by chains and lead-generation engines. We answer the phone on weekends, photograph our own listings, and walk every dock at every show. The argument with the sea is long; we choose to argue carefully.

We do not chase volume. We chase the kind of buyer and the kind of boat that we would invite into our own berth — and we walk the docks until we find them.
