1990 Morgan Catalina 50

The Morgan / Catalina 50 was a bit of a groundbreaker in its day and in many ways still at the head of its class in design. “Tropical Impulse” is priced right and will be a great buy for anyone wanting a great sailing boat with lots of room at a great price. She is nicely equipped and has made the trip to the islands many times with the current very experienced owners. "Tropical Impulse" has had proper care and maintenance, keeping it in ready to go condition at all times. There have been many custom features added over the years making her a step above any other Morgan 50 or similar boats on the market today.

When first approaching “Tropical Impulse” the first thing you will notice is the hard dodger and bimini. This feature was designed by the owner after many years of thought and is the best aftermarket unit I have ever seen. The unit has large opening windows across the front providing more ventilation then a normal dodger. The hard bimini covers the entire cockpit and is connected to the custom stainless steel arch at the rear providing extra strength. There are side curtains that enclose the cockpit for a comfortable sail or anchor in the worst of weather. The cockpit is large and well laid out, complete with rear access to the swim platform and a large double leaf cockpit table. Aft outside storage is provided by a huge cockpit locker on the starboard side and propane storage for 2 bottles at the stern. The sole is covered with custom made teak grates, keeping the cockpit clean, an easy task.

Going forward the decks are wide and uncluttered with the liferaft mounted just aft of the mast and granny bars. At the bow is large anchor locker and windlass and ground tackle on separate rollers. Starboard side is a 75 lb CQR on 300’ of HT chain and on the port side is a 65 lb claw providing for a good nights sleep. Just aft of the anchor locker is what was built as a crew cabin but has been converted to a work shop. Storage room and generator space (a real bonus for a cruiser).

Back to the cockpit and now stepping down the companionway, you are greeted by a large bright salon, galley and nav area. Her 14’-9” beam makes for a very comfortable cabin and the salon uses every inch. To port is a huge dining table with seating on all four sides with a centerline bench seat that opens to create great engine access. On the starboard side are 2 swivel chairs with a small table between them and the forward chair swivels around to double as the seating at the chart table. Aft of the chairs to starboard is a very large, deep U-shaped galley. There is plenty of storage both above and below the corian countertop with corian fiddles and back splash. There is a 3 burner propane stove with oven, and a built in microwave above for the cooking duties. Also there are two deep stainless steel sinks for the cleanup. Cold food storage is plentiful with a separate cold plate freezer compartment and a 3 lid refrigerator compartment.

Aft and to port is the first of the 3 heads. This head serves both as a common head and aft cabin head. This space is bright and airy with all white surfaces trimmed in teak. The countertop is white corian with a stainless steel sink with storage below, a Raratan head and shower. The aft cabin is anything but a dungeon. This space is also very bright and airy. Outboard is white planking, inboard at eye level is white fiberglass with 3 opening ports. The aft end wall and all cabinetry, hanging locker and trim, are done in teak for a beautiful, old world nautical feel.

At the forward end of the salon are 2 matching cabins with 2 matching heads. Each cabin has plenty of storage including hanging lockers, a Raratan head and shower in each head. The interior is finished with the outboard sides done in the white planking. The headliner and eye level fiberglass is also finished in white. All the rest of the surfaces are finished in teak. Each cabin has 2 opening ports and a hatch. The heads are again all finished in white with plenty of teak trim and corian counter tops with stainless steel sinks.

This boat is beautifully finished throughout with a very generous use of teak with a high gloss varnish finish. The sole throughout  is teak and holly. Natural ventilation is provided by 16 stainless steel opening ports and 10 opening hatches with the main salon hatch measuring a full 34”. The cushions throughout the boat were replaced 2 years ago, including both the foam and fabric. “Tropical Impulse” is a complete package and ready to go. After owning and caring for her for 16 years the owners are giving up boating and will be turning her over as a complete ready to go yacht.
